Im under contract to buy a house. It's a USDA loan and it's taking forever! Anyhow, the house shares a driveway/lane with a dairy farm. They just sold it to a company who is turning it into a chicken egg farm. It's about 1/8 of a mile past the house. I'm very concerned about the smell and how much traffic will be going in and out if this place. Anyone know about such things?

lots of traffic and lots of smell, believe me. complaints will fall on deaf ears. a dairy farm would be heaven compared to a chicken ranch (egg laying house).

I had a classmate who lived on a chicken farm - they had torrential mouse plagues every so often. They seemed pretty matter of fact about living in a house (and farm) with a constantly moving background of grey - the little bastards were everywhere - beds, cupboards, tabletops! Not to mention the mice urine/faeces and stench. The cats had lost interest after day one.

I believe I'd try to back out of that deal if it's still possible.

Chicken sh*t, at least in our area, attracts these little black bugs that are small enough to fit through your window screens. Once a year, when they lay it down for fertilizer, the insides of nearby houses are covered in little black chicken sh*t flies....

I'm about 7 miles away from one-- no big deal but you smell it when you drive by from about a mile away especially on a warm Summer Eve. There are no Houses within probably a mile of this place. I couldn't imagine the stench in a Humid area in the Summer where you are--- right next door. I'd also back out of the Contract if at all possible.

God, I have lived about 1/2 mile from a chicken farm. Smell was horrendous. It is acrid and will burn your nostrils. I moved as soon as I could. I did not realize how bad it would be. On a hot summer day, I could barely breathe, it was so bad.

TGP has already conducted a study that may interest you.

It is safe to shove one sheet of Bounce up each nostril to defend against unpleasant doors.

Please consult with @aynirar27 for all field study data.

I wasn't sure if a brand new facility would smell less if at all. However the waste spread on the fields would not be good..
