Does TGP actually hate John Mayer or is it more like, meh?

Discussion in 'The Sound Hound Lounge' started by Mickey_C, Oct 9, 2019.

Which of the following best expressed your feelings about John Mayer's guitar playing?

  1. I love his playing; Mayer is a virtuoso, one of the very best.

  2. He's very good, but not one of the best guitarists ever.

  3. He's OK on guitar, just nothing remarkable on that front.

  4. You could characterize me as totally unimpressed by his guitar skills.

  5. I just think he kinda sucks on guitar, for all the hype.

  6. When I think of his playing I have pure, unadulterated, hate.

  7. New addition: He's no virtuoso, but he's no hack.

    Simple enough. Simple poll too.

Every I express my lack of amazement at John Mayer's playing I get labeled a hater. I personally don't hate Mayer, I even bought (actually paid for) some of his music. It has its place.

But I don't think he's an amazing guitarist. In my opinion, he's far from being a virtuoso.

So I am just wondering, without muddying the water with arguments/excuses like, "It's not where he is now, but where he will be as he's getting better", how do you consider him today?

Is he one of the best guitarists ever?

    Do you hate him?

    Do you love him?

Or is he good enough, and kind of meh?

he's more capable than his recorded music reveals.

he needs a better filter when he opens his mouth.

his tone is good but maybe a bit overrated. it was definitely the best when he was playing Fenders into Two Rocks.

his taste in watches is fire though.

I don’t hate anyone or anything.

    John is a great player/entertainer.

I doubt I will pay to see him, but the dude has chops.

There's this really weird idea that "TGP" has an opinion. The truth is, on almost EVERY issue, TGP has a strong and vocal contingent on EVERY SIDE OF IT.

That being said, people who dislike things are more prone to start threads and offer their opinions. It's visceral. So people are left with the impression that "TGP hates x", when in reality it's just that one select group. It's a different group that hates y, and yet another that hates z.

    Well so far, no haters.

No surprise for me. I think the entire concept that people hate on JM is a myth.

Well John Mayer isn't really a virtuoso on record. But live, and on Instagram, etc when he's just 'noodling' he kills it.Worth anyone's time. There's too much variety out there to call anyone the best, but I can say he should be up for consideration as one of the top.

He has a few different "modes"; acoustic songwriter that writes catchy pop oriented stuff, "light rocker" that tosses in SRV/Hendrix flavored riffs on top of poppy type tunes, straight up blues guitar trio frontman that can pull off a rippin SRV style solo, and "Dead and Co." guy that can weave Jerry type lix and tones.

He gets flack for his acoustic stuff, but it probably got him the most $$$, I like his trio and work with the Dead and Co.

He seems to be pretty easygoing and has a sense of humor about his fans/detractors, makes piles of dough and bags the hottest actresses/models.

    Whats not to love?

We probably won't get more than 50 responses. I think as topics go most people just don't give a hoot either way.

I have zero interest in his music but he is clearly skilled and his success can’t be denied

I think there are few mainstream modern guitar gods anymore so he gets held up as the modern example of this which probably rankles some who think he is not on the level of guys in prior generations who were held up as this type of idol

I think that this type of comparison is probably silly ultimately because this is a different era

I think he's a great writer, great singer/storyteller, pretty good rhythm guitar player, and mediocre lead guitarist.

If the "Modern Era" thinks Mayer is some kind of lead guitar virtuoso then all I can say is WTF.

I don't think his music allows him to dive deep, but he really dove into playing Jerry's stuff with Dead and Co.

He did attend Berklee for a bit, and seems to know how to form chords that are pretty complex. Not a virtuoso, but not a hack.
