Does the whole "ignore list" thang say more about the ignorer than the ignoree?

Ive just been browsing the threads throughout the forums and saw several instances of "ignore list" threats.

It seems strange to threaten someone to ignore them, no? I mean just ignore them if they bother you so.

I've never ignored anyone and don't need that feature. I have thick skin but further more I can skip what I like and don't like quite easily.

Brian preaches about being kind to others and I agree but I think some of us take this stuff too seriously.

Like if you agree. If you disagree, why?

So apparently with the new software, ignoring someone actually causes their post to not appear, rather than the text above which came up previously. Probably better. But now I can't use this joke anymore :(

I think the answer to your question is that publiclly declaring someone is on your ignore list makes it clear you're ignoring him, and not simply backing down from whatever argument might be going on at the time. Fairly petty, but there it is.

Yes it does. It's a tool for the immature, the thin skinned and others that can't deal with reality. Grow up.

Thank you for this post. Every one that belittles the IL goes on it. Done.
So, no, it doesn't. If it did, it would also say the say thing about the forum owners that provide the tool. Some people just don't have anything contributable to say and it can be used in a non-spiteful way.
BTW, post #666 for me, how appropriate.

I would love an ignore button in real life, but never once thought to use one on a internet forum

IMO, having an "ignore list" almost as childish as sniveling to Mommy/moderator when someone else posts something disagreeable...

Some folks seem to function better in a structured environment, I suppose.

Live and let live. I personally don't need a list to ignore something/someone, but I also understand that other people might feel differently. It's a tool - use it or don't, but why waste time/effort bitching about others using it?

I've never used it and never will. I strive to be a big boy, taking both bad and good with equal measure. I fail sometimes to be a big boy but I always strive. :D

I'm putting this thread on my ignore list because I can't find any other discussions that interest me.

By stating to a user that you just put him on your ignore list is a way of getting the last word in and rubbing their nose in it. And it's seems like a way to announce to the rest of the forum that you think the offending poster is somehow invalid.

I haven't used this function. But, if I did choose to, I would just do it. I wouldn't feel a need to announce in the thread that I had done so.
