I recently purchesd La Bella Black Nylon Tapewound "Beatle" bass strings for my Hofner 500 / 1. I've now had two luthiers tell me that these strings can't be put on my bass because they are too big to fit in the tuning pegs.

Is this a situation where I can be the stupid one? La Bella calls them "Beatle Bass" strings. Should they not fit PERFECTLY?

    Anyone have this problem?

I use LaBella 760HFB-2 flatwounds on my Hofner 500/1 and they fit perfectly in everyway. No issues!

Those are meant to be strung on a later years "Beatle Bass" most likely... You know, a Jazz or Ric. I've tried the Rotosound version of those and they are WAY too thick for some posts. They were even too thick for a VM Squier Jazz's bridge without a little filing.

They were specifically designed for a short scale Hofner bass ... this is what I don't get.

According to what I've read anyways, when Sir Paul was using the tapewound strings, he was using them on a Rickenbacker (Abbey Road).

Fender has a thinner set of black tapewounds if needed.

Sorry about the strings, if this can't be resolved I recommend Pyramid short scale strings. They sounded great on my Hof.

I have the Pyramids on my Hofner now ... great flatwound strings. I'm just dying to try out black nylon tapewound strings; they seem and sound very cool.

Again, the situation is so strange. The La Bella strings were specifically made for the Hofner short scale bass. I just ordered a set of D'addario black nylons ... lighter gauge.

Problem solved! My luthier spoke with La Bella and they told him that the strings were probably mislabeled. They are sending new strings no charge.

A+++ for La Bella customer service.

FWIW, Pyramid makes an OEM Hofner-branded set of shortscale strings for Hofner in black wrap as well as in flatwound and roundwound.
