    Hi,

I just put Don Mare's Super Sport T set in my pink paisley telecaster.
Can someone suggest the optimal pickup height. What are settings to start from and I can tweak from there.

    Thanks

    Oh Pickup height!
I was going to say I don't know how tall Don is and you'd have to ask him.

    I'm sure Don will be here soon to reply but I would suggest starting with Fender factory specs and adjusting from there;

    3/32nds" trable side
    5/64ths" bass side.

To top of pu with both E strings fretted at the last fret.
Measure from the bottom of string.

    I'd guess 5'11"

There is no correct height, just do it by ear. You don't want to be too close and usually have the bass side a tad lower than the treble.

Yeah, the further you can stay away with still retaining a full sound is always best for definition and clarity.

Aw man, you're just suckin' up!

Everyone knows that he's 5' 8" but the enlargement of his mind to hold all of that valuable and crucial pickup info makes him 6' 2".

Up = more volume and bass
Down = Less volume and more highs

Really - Really - close = warble and woffy tones ,especially on the bass

But.. I like mine close -
I press the strings down at the 21st / 22nd. fret and I then adjust the screws so I get just enough clearance to pick aggressively and not hit the pups.. its always a bit more then a Nickel but not a Nickel and a dime - like a half of a dime and a nickel

    this is an interesting post.

I got my super sport set a couple of weeks ago- they sound great! but I found that the neck pup was so strong i didn't get a useful middle position tone.

When I dropped the neck pup down quite a bit, it worked MUCH better.

My Super Sports are 4/32 on the bridge pup and 5/32 on the neck. That might be a little too far but the guitar sounds real nice so I don't think I'll mess with it.

The 2324's in my other Mare Tele are 4/32 on each pup. I'm happy there too.

I don't see adjustment screws for the neck p/u. Are they under the pickguard?

I spent a lot of time messing with my S-Telly neck pickup to get it just the way I like it. With the strings fretted at the highest fret I get 5/64" from the cover to the bottom of the string on both E strings (standard tuning). YMMV

has anyone else found that lowering the neck pickup gives you a better middle position tone?

BTW- i don't mean this as a knock to the pickups- they sound AMAZING!!!

I just haven't found that middle position to be as usable, it sounds just like the neck position unless i lower the neck pup down about three quarters.

I think I have my Super Sports neck pickup way lower than most at 12/64ths with the strings fretted at the last fret. My bridge is 6/64 treble side 7/64 bass side. According to Don's settings..I meaured a dime and a nickel at 7/64ths, so his half a dime and nickel should be about 5.5/64ths. When I had the neck higher, the middle position was too bassy for me..so I lowered it till I liked the middle position and the neck and bridge volumes were similar. For those of you with the neck closer to the strings, do you have a big difference in volume between the neck and bridge? This is a great post because I didn't want to bother Don with the same question. In the end, just set it to where it sounds best to you..but I'm still curious what others are doing.
