    Hi Mark. :wave

Back to the OP. Yep, all the Steely Dan recordings Larry did were his '69 335 and a 50's 5E3.

    Fit's the music very well.

That is about all that impresses me about it. If I heard Mustang Sally with that tone, I would go out back and smoke a cigarette till the set was done. I don't even smoke.

    Belching and blaring. Blech!

Ew, farty and fuzzy and not a tone I like at all. Just not my style.

    Good playing though :)

While I dislike the opening gnarly crunch, Yep, for lead work the 5E3 shines. Many of the best Eagles lead solos were 5E3's with no pedals also. Unfortunately, it's a bit of a one trick pony to my ears, and the non lead work I cant handle a 5E3.
Just a reminder of a well tuned 5E3 sounds like no pedals, ,(I know overplayed to death) lead starts at 4:19

    Fooled by what?

Sounds nothing like a dumble. Much better!

Your amps wield the best guitar tones, man. Seriously, I go out and travel to different stores, play some boutique amps which sound great, and come back home to plug into my Mean Street Gen III and can't recall hearing a better tone.
I know you voiced my amp to sound great with single coils cause at the time I was exclusively playing Strats. I've since come to acquire a 335 which I love and it easily sounds best with the MS out of all my amps.
Right now I must admit to be looking for a JTM45 amp to get my ultimate British tone fix.

Great tone and a precise, masterful player at the helm. What's there not to like?

It is Larry Carlton,...jeeesh, I mean he could make any amp,...even a Dumble sound good.

Without knowing which amp it was, it was easily recognizable as a pushed tweed tone. Definitely not D-style tone.
