I love Clapton, SRV, Freddie King, and so many others, but don't really aspire to play "like" them (as if that was even possible!). I've had the pleasure to see Doug Pettibone a few times with Lucinda Williams (inc @ the Fillmore when they recorded their live album), and he seems to capture what I'd love to be able to do on guitar. Great skill, but it's his tone and phrasing that just seems perfect to me. I did a search on the Gear Page to get more details about him, but was surprised to see only one slight mention. If you don't know his work check him out (live, if possible).

He's hands down one of my favorite players! I got introduced to him and Lucinda about 10 years ago on her Soundstage appearance. They both blew my mind. Saw them live and Doug is the real deal. Tone, phasing, space in the song, etc - mind blowing guitar player. I've recently been listening to Lucinda's "Live At The Fillmore" nonstop! So many great songs and tones on that one but, "Out Of Touch" really does it for me. He's also the guy that got me into Trussart guitars too.

Doug Pettibone is definitely one of my favorite guitarists.

Love his use of effects - especially tremolo & fuzz, guitars and amps to coax many inspired tones that always lend to the song.

    Pettibone is amazing!

I wonder what the TGP masses opinion of him will be, once word gets out that he's been hired for John Mayer's current tour?

The performance the OP put up of Essence is so damned good. Incredibly tasteful use of radical pedals.

I've seen him with Lucinda several times and he has evolved over time, continually getting better and better. He can even tame the z-vex fuzz factory. Impressive.

Have been a ton of threads about him on TGP.

He's pretty well known to any guitar player with any hipness whatsoever.

a friend took me to see Marianne Faithful not long ago. Good show. I'm digging it...I'm thinking; "man, that guitar player is killing! tasteful, just right for the song, the vibe, the show and when called for, steps out and kills it! ...It slowly dawns on me - that's Doug Pettibone!
    nice surprise!

Shared a bill with him once, unbeknowst to me at the time. We were both just playing with a couple local singer/songwriters at a venue called The Mint here in LA. The band he was with went on just before mine, and I sat and listened to the whole thing basically because of his playing (I didn't think much of the singer/songwriter, honestly). As I loaded on and he loaded off I made a point of going up and telling him how much I enjoyed his playing and he introduced himself, and that's when I realized he was the guy whose playing I enjoyed on Lucinda's records. Super nice cat.

Love his playing! I saw him with Lucinda at the Fillmore.

He's one of those guys, just like Mike Campbell, that if I was starting over again, would definitely try to model my playing after.

Kind of a perfect guitar player

Doug is a great guitarist, but more importantly he is a great musisician who makes his guitar a vital comopnent of almost every song he plays on.

If you do a search for 'Pettibone' and look at titles only you will find at least 11 threads on him here at TGP.

That tone from the Matchless, fuzz, guitar on "Righteously" is, well, just that -righteous.

What amp is he playing through here? I don't see any Matchless amps behind him?

That is a great tone. When I saw them live he was using a Bad Cat, but I am not sure if it was a Hot Cat 30 or something else.
