Why are you downsizing? That's the first thing to figure out. If it's space, then figure out how much space you need. Remove everything, and then refill it all up, one piece at a time with the most important one fist, and when you've hit your space limit, sell the rest. Better yet, sell a few others that you can fit, so you'll have some room to grow, because you'll probably want to buy more with all of that money.

It's just stuff. Take the money you make and invest it. Should you decide you need something again after you've sold it, you have the money to buy it back (and maybe then some).

spot on 100%, I find I am struggling most with guitars. And amps take up most space.

It took Clapton a lifetime before he sold off many. Its nothing but addiction, and a good passion, better than some other bad habbits out here.

For me the hard ones are my 12 string guitars. Have a 12 string ric and 12 string guild acoustic, both rarely get played, but I love them when I do play them. So one one hand they are easy to let go, but on the other hand, nothing I have will get that 12 string sound.

It's amazing that David Gilmour was able to sell a sizable portion of his collection - including his most renowned pieces, which were directly involved in the creation and performance of some absolutely legendary songs/albums - admirably and for the benefit of the less fortunate. Then we have this...

Few points to note, as I have learnt through my years:
    1. Buy one and sell one.
    2. Create more than adequate space, you will run out. Managing space is key.
    3. Define a threshold and stop adding until you reduce.
    4. Selling and you will regret it, but that's how it goes.
    6. Never sell when you are broke.

    I am at 3 now...
Enjoy your collection. Holding on to your pieces is fun.

So many good points listed in this thread and so many experiences, TGP is the place...

There was no Corvette in my plans...but I am building an addition (or better said, expanding an existing addition) to create a new studio space that will be about 3X larger than my current one.
That will certainly take care of my current gear space issues...and I'm now looking to add more gear, rather than having to downsize. :)

That is the way to go. Space is the priority. For me I have a huge space, and adding any more at this point is going to be nuts. I have to reduce the current inventory and get it to be more manageable.

if money and space wasn't an issue for me I'd double the first two so I could have a Strat and Les Paul in both standard and Eb tuning. and add a shredder guitar. and add a baritone. and add a..... well you get the idea

The secret to downsizing is simple.
    You don't do it. ;)
Why fight the inevitable - indulge! :p
If you have a double, make it a triple.
Now go ahead and buy that piece of gear you've been hankering for. Your'e entitled. :)

Best advice I received today was stop listing any more until the ones on the list sell.
I have 24 pieces for sale and that's it.
    I can relax now.
And thank God I do not have to go through any more reduction until I buy something else.
