    summary:
Evidence already exists for the beneficial effects of drinking moderate amounts of alcohol on the risk of developing a number of heart conditions; however, the role it plays in the risk of developing heart failure has been under-researched with conflicting results. Now, a large study of nearly 15,000 men and women shows that drinking up to seven drinks a week in early to middle age is associated with a 20% lower risk of men developing heart failure in the future when compared to people who did not drink at all, and a more modest 16% reduced risk for women.

Seven drinks a day, that's great! But it means I'm gonna have to cut back a bit.

I think drinking more than your share is actually as hard on your heart as it is your brain and liver :waiting

I think this illuminates just how much people physically suffer from stress moreso than showing how well your body tolerates alcohol.

Too drunk to read the OP, was that seven drinks an hour?

I enjoy a beer once in a while, but here is the truth, drinking one beer a day can lead to drinking 2 to 6 beers/day, and that is not only really bad for your health, it is bad for your lifestyle. Especially if you drive or have kids.

So, the only problem I have with the OP is that for a lot of people who can't control their drinking, it justifies that step of trying to "cut back and control" (which they can't really do) rather than just quit all together (which is long tern better if you have alcoholic tendencies).

To clarify, for a drunk one is too many and also never enough. I have heard a lot of doctors say "while the one day theory has been shown in some studies, especially for wine, it has also been shown that most people who believe in this are also more likely better off just quitting."

Keep in mind they define a drink as one unit of alcohol, where one unit = 14g.

In a single 12 oz IPA there are about two units of alcohol (around 27g of alcohol approx)

No one drinks half a beer and calls it one drink.

I know they tried to account for confounders but I still think the protective effect being found in moderate drinkers is a proxy for something else. My purely unsupported hunch is that a multitude of lifestyle factors tend to fold into a pattern and that "moderate drinking" is statistically a representative feature of this lifestyle.

my great aunt and uncle shared a miller high life at dinner every night until they both passed a couple years shy of 100.
I'm not saying they owed their health to half a beer a day, but I certainly believe it helped. My blood pressure has gone down continually since I began having a bourbon every evening.

    Moderate....moderate.....

Hmm. I'm not familiar with this word. It doesn't seem go with the word "alcohol" in any way, shape or form.

Ya know, this isn't really news. Moderate abuse has been known to be beneficial since at least the 80s.

why not? Plenty of people have zero issues having a glass of wine with dinner, or sipping some whiskey at night, and that's it. There us a whole world of people out there that don't drink to get drunk.

I am always amazed at the number of people I have met in my life that drink but swear they hate the taste of all alcohol.
