My buddy who bought my DRRI called me last night and said he's having problems with the amp. He says the light dims as he plays and the amp sounds underpowered to him. He also thinks one of his preamp tubes is microphonic as well. Is this the problem or is something more sinister at work?

If he's talking about the pilot lamp, that's the 6.3vac filament supply.

That would be either the power transformer, or somehow the 115AC source. OR , a bad connection along the way.

I would imagine bad heater voltage could make the amp sound weak.

It could be a few things, all of them in or behind the power supply.

Believe it or not, I have an old 6G15 reverb that does the same thing, and it was the on/off switch(!)

Not likely in your case, that was sort of a fluke. More likely: I bet the guy has bad power in the place where he's using the amp. I experienced similar behavior with my amp once (weak tone, dim light) and I measured only 88VAC coming out of the wall. Power company's fault. :)

I've changd more than one light socket because of a bad connection between the bulb and the base.
Other than that, yes, I think there's something sinister.... lurking....
