I think that will prove to be a very poor investment.

Was going to bid, but they didn't disclose the weight. So I passed.

I'm still pissed! I went down to the wire but came up $12.37 short.

    One bid took it.

It’s worth what one person was willing to spend on it

That’s true obviously. But the fan base that had a first-person experience with the Allman’s will be dead before it changes hands again.

I don't know that's that bad of a deal. Duane Allman's musical legacy has stood the test of time despite passing at only 24. And because his career was so short, there are only a few guitars associated with his recording career.

His Gibson SG (which wasn't used on LAFE, btw) went for over $500k, even though he only played slide on it live for the last few months of his career. The goldtop was on the first two ABB studio albums and D&D's Layla. If it was all original, it's probably worth $2m+. Refin'd guitar at half price?

I'd bet his two 'bursts would go for as much if his daughter ever sold them. Gilmore's Black Strat at $4m has kind of reset the bar, IMO.

I think the fact that nobody else thought the opening bid amount was realistic tells how good of a deal it was.

Every guitar in the DG auction received multiple bids.

Dickey used the SG on the first two albums, too, though, as well as the “one brother to another” story Gibson used to sell the replicas, so it had more than just Duane’s use of it going for it.

Les Paul worth 1/3 as much as a Strat? Sounds about right. :p

I dislike it strongly when people harp on Layla and all of the faults with it, just let it be. The whole album is a "beautiful trainwreck", and should stand on it's own.

I'm learning that solo now, and after many feeble attempts to play it "in tune" on a Les Paul, I'm now playing it on my 24 fret PRS, and it's tons easier.

I don't think the people buying these celebrity guitars or this guitar in particular do it to make money. They do it for bragging rights.

People don't buy Bugattis to make a profit, but yet they always sell out.
