I am going away for a week and plan to take a guitar with me. No amp, however. I play clean with a little reverb. My thought was to get an adapter, plug the guitar right into the microphone input of my computer (a MacBook pro), open Garageband, and use one of the models in that. It isn't working.

First question: Can I even do this?

Two: if so, what am I doing wrong? If not, what is a cheap alternative? I may want to play with some friends, but mostly, I just want to practice while on vacation. I could just play unplugged, so that is certainly an option. But, this should be easy.

Thanks for the help, and sorry for the dumbness factor of the question.

That should work. Maybe your computer is defaulting to built-in mike instead of audio input.

I have done this and used the built in output direst to a DI box. Make sure nothing else is running and that you try it out first!

I use 2 of the same cord, 1/8" to 1/4 "--1 in and 1 out!

Thanks, Guys! It works, now. I had the wrong input picked. Appreciate the guidance, and the patience. Technology is amazing.
