Just wondering how often you play above the 12th fret on the E-A-D strings? And if you could write what style guitar you play; Les Paul, Strat, Tele.

I've been working on basic, first lesson exercises from AYGP and it's a bear getting way up there (smoothly) on my Les Paul.

    Thanks.

my fretwear indicates "not as often as some other parts of the neck."

    but it does happen!

I hardly do in practice...really..the only strings that sound good at such high frettages are the lighter strings such as e, g, b, d...

try playing an E power chord based on the open E of the sixth string (just an Em chord really)....now try playing it on the 12th fret of the 6th string....gross...buzzy...nasty...

I agree that the 6th string E sounds nasty up there. However, on my Jaguar, the 12-14th frets of A and D sound awesome, it is my favorite spot. I like it better than the sound of the light strings.

The E is rare, but the D and A all the time. Mainly on my SG, but I will use the D on any of my guitars.

I use all of them, although the lower strings do see a little less use.

For anyone who says that the E and A strings don't have a nice sound above the 12th fret, Mr Iommi would like to have a few words with you :p

    all the time.

    they're just a different texture.

you have to use all the shades, other wise you're jsut playing in black and white.

All the time here as well. Mostly on my PRS's, but also my Les Paul R8 and my Thorn.

Yup. Do it all the time. ES-335. used to play Strats too. Same deal.
If it sounds sucky up there, its you and/or your guitar no? Maybe don't hit it so hard? (or maybe I just get a consistently sucky sound on the lower positions too :)
I play classical too, so comparatively it's a cakewalk playing on those high positions on a cutaway electric.

Someone like the late Shawn Lane was at total ease
in that area of the neck.
Notice the angle of the guitar and closeness to the head.
    That definately aides in access.

I play up there occasionally, but mostly A & D. Rarely the E.
My axe is a Les Paul.
