What makes his amp sounds this way (definitely a different tone from the other songs)?

I'm actually not a fan of this sound. My 1987x can sound this way sometimes when I have the volumes up pretty high and the attenuator turned down lower. I feel like it's something to do with worn out tubes or something wrong with the power supply, but I don't have the experience to make that assumption.

    Anyone know what it is?

The whole recipe: pickup, speakers, pick, eq at the board, etc.

You can't get that amount of gain from a stock Plexi.

    His echoplex apparently added some.

The preamp in the Echoplex is a very interesting sounding circuit.

I have the Badgerplex AC, which is a crazy 120V pedal. It has the TIS58 operating at 24V

Love that thing in front of a 2203.

Anyone who does has either forgotten, or will never tell.

Sounds like an MXR distortion+ in front of a Marshall.

If I recall reading how he attained the "Brown Sound" was a 100W Marshall Plexi with EL34 power tubes all dimed out with its power plugged into a Variac that he dropped to 80% of the voltage, essentially starving the tubes of power making it warmer. As for that extra gain it was either the preamp part of the Echoplex delay unit or he had used an MXR pedal as well.

Eddie's gain isn't really high. You can still hear a lot of string definition and "tinginess" in Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love when he does the palm muted arpeggios. A high gain signal does not sound like that. The sound engineers compressed the signal (maybe just due to the recording process itself) and pumped up the 5-8kHz region by gobs of dBs to bring out those sterling upper harmonics. Just open the beginning of You Really Got Me in a frequency plot. The bump in the high end is huge compared to other recordings of Plexis. So it sounds like it has tons of harmonics because they brought out every last harmonic possible without sounding tinny. Try it. Compress a mid-gain signal and boost the upper harmonics until they sound like Eddie's. There's the hidden "gain".

Hey man, you just described Randy Rhoads' setup too, the MXR Distortion + into a Marshall. But I think EVH also had that too, lets face it, back then (late 70s to early 80s) the more popular recipe was a Marshall amp & an MXR pedal.
