The Dario Miniwatt is probably considered to be the best ef86 out there. An NOS Tesla can run for about $35 bucks though...for current production JJ, Tung Sol, and Electro-Harmonix all make one...I can comment on the Electro-Harmonix one...it sucked for me, even in a head with plenty of dampening it would always ring sometimes without me even playing when the volume was really low. GE has one as well that's either an ef86 or 6267(which is likely the american name for the tube) that you can get for somewhere around 80 bucks from thetubestore.com other placed may have it cheaper though.

I figured there might some on ebay or something...I have no idea though lol. Sorry about that. I guess my advice, at least for small signal pentodes like this, would be to go NOS for sure. Putting so many components into such a small package means construction quality is really important, and NOS Tesla are only $35, so they're not all super expensive.

I just suggest that you at least learn from my experience with Electro-Harmonix which was the cheapest modern producer of these tubes when I got one, and don't be too cheap! With these tubes especially.

I'm sure I'm leaving some bigger brands out, and I know that I don't have a clue about their tonal qualities compared to each other, but I bet some of the much more highly educated people on this board will chime in and point you in the right direction. :)

ive tried Amperex (pretty good), Tesla (nothing to write home about), and Telefunken (truely awesome).

the telefunken just gave it more balance and clarity.

    Thats all ive tried sorry

NOS Mullards are great. NOS Tesla EF806S (high grade EF86) are well liked and a relative bargain.

I'm pretty sure they're the same item. Dario is a brand name as is Amperex. They're both made in Holland and Philips, the parent company to both brand names, was likely the only manufacturer in Holland.

What you might have experienced is normal variations between two items of the same kind.

Another true statement ...I saw very minute differences but look like siblings to me.

    Good luck with the search!

I just bought a Dario Miniwatt from Gregg at Hitest Guitars. The Tung Sol EF86 in my Britain 3.0 went micro phonic and started crackling after about 1 hour of use. Greg assured me that he hasn't had 1 single call about his EF86's going out very quickly. I'd look him up on the web and give him a call.

Now that I look at them you are right. Look identical. Perhaps my Dario was tired.
