Brilliant... you want to know "which songs use which effects."

Just when you think you've seen it all...

what a guitar player needs the most is experience and developed ears.
Not trying to be a smartass, that's just the way it is.
No two rigs are identical sounding.

I have a suggestion for the original poster (you'll see that as "OP" from now on):

If you are interested in learning songs from Guitar World magazine, for example, there is a page before all the tabs that talks about how to get the sounds. There are photos of common pedals used (Roland/Boss sponsors this, so it's all their stuff) and the settings. It will get you in the ballpark, but like eleanor said, results will vary with your gear. Experiment, play with the knobs, and you'll find that in your quest fo rsomebody else' sounds, you'll discover your own sounds!

    Oh, and good luck!

    Hey, Gidster! Welcome!

Every different song uses a different combination of effects to get its unique tone. If you have a Zoom you are probably already familiar with distortion, reverb, delay, etc. The best way to figure out what sounds are what is to pick a particular song, or a part of a particular song, and ask the forum what they think the sound might be.

Example: "What pedals do you guys think Jack White used for the solo in 'Blue Orchid?'"

Usually, someone here will either know the answer or can make an educated guess on what pedal(s) would get you in the ballpark for the sound you're looking for.

I hope that helps. It's great that you're getting started on the guitar. Keep at it!

Actually, this got me to thinking of how different effects were 'benchmarked' in my ear ...might make an interesting thread. I'd say...

    Strat through wah...VooDoo Chile
    SG through wah......White Room
Les paul through wah....Sweet Child o' Mine
    Echoplex(delay).............Feel Like Makin love
    Flanger....Unchained, Keep yourself alive
Phaser, single coil through MXR 90...Shattered by stones
Phaser, humbuckers through small stone...fingerprint file (stones)
Strat through Chorus....every clean tone in the 80's LOL
Univibe and strat....Bridge of Sighs, Machine Gun
Octive lowering....Prince intro to When Doves Cry, Neil Young Into the Black
    Octive up...solo to Purple Haze
Strat through Tube Screamer............SRV lead tone, pick one
    etc....
MXR Distortion through Marshall Randy Rhodes Suicide Solution
Envelope Filter.....solo to What I Am..Edie Brikell (sorry, it was first time I realized all wah sounds weren't wah's)
Eventide Harmonizer....Steve Vai passion and warfare album, can't specify tracks, but it's all over

What do you guys think of as defining effects tone songs?

Actually, for Les Paul through wah, my choice would be Civil War :RoCkIn

For Phaser: Have a Cigar by Pink Floyd or Lightning Crashes by Live

I do have to give the OP credit though... How often do we see the word "Song" in this forum? And in the end, IMO, that's what this forum should indirectly be about.

I'm kinda glad to see that this guy didnt get torn apart here. With that said, I feel like the kinda answers he's looking for aren't gonna come in this forum.

i wonder what genre the OP likes. could help narrow it down. also just in general, not for a specific song, but for guitarists, there's always GuitarGeek to check out rigs in that point in time:

Spend time with your zoom unit.

Fiddle with each effect individually..mess with parameters and such. You will kinda figure out what they can do and what they cannot do.

i.e. the swooosh of FLANGER, the wooosh of PHASER, the echo, echo, echo, of DELAY etc, etc, etc...

After that, you will have to use your imagination.

    Best of luck!

NExt time mention you wanna buy $4000 in pedals and the jerks will be nicer...

I would suggest you google famous guitarist rigs or similar play on words and you can start there,,,after that its trial and error Im afraid

haha... i know it's not his fault, but you HAVE to admit it was commical when you read the original post. We on TGP get so caught up in "which is the best tubescreamer-clone-mod?" An innocent perspective is funny, and I don't mind busting someone's chops a bit.

YOU dont mind? Well, thats what everything is really all about isnt it. The guy is brand new, has a question about gear on The Gear Page. I certainly didnt see it as "comical". I'll bet your response made him feel real welcome.

To everyone else: great and informative responses!!

Since you're just learning, how about throwing out some tunes you're trying to learn as a starting point?
