So for a lot of my life I've had an aversion to dirty amps. I always like the "clean platform with pedals" type of sound. However, I'm looking to try something a little different now. I'm looking for an EL84 amp or similar amp that can hit some of those overdriven rock tones, but still have a clean tone that sounds lively. However, after lugging around a 40 lb. Two Rock Studio Pro 50, I'm in the mood for something a little more manageable in a smaller box between 20-30 lbs.

I've seen that the Suhr Badger 30, Friedman PT-20, and Marshall 2061x seem to fall into this category of relatively portable amps that have the capability of screaming if you want them to. Any other suggestions? Or experiences with amps in this category?

I have a 2061x and it's my favorite amp. I run it turned up to about 8 or 9 (2 or 3 o'clock), and can clean up with the guitar volume or set it over the top with a boost (I like the Beano). It's apretty loud amp, and I usually have to attenuate a bit.

It doesn't hurt that it looks awesome as well.

You should check out Satellite Amps. The Neutron is 18 watt powered by 2 x EL84's, the Atom is 36 watts with 4 x EL84's. Amazing amps made by a great guy.

The Friedman PT-20 absolutely screams. Great sounding little amp.

TopHat Club Royale, in the 1x12 package if you are looking for smaller footprint; 2x12 model has a bigger sound and breathes better (is more open sounding). Plus the 2x12 isn't much bigger than the 1x12. My fave small chassis/tranny EL84 amp because it beautifully bridges the Marshall/Vox sound spectrum. And the amp has a great master volume, impeccable build quality and Heyboer transformers.

If you want a much bigger sounding EL84-based amp that is utterly Vox-like and clean sounding, but also in a small package, think of a Dr. Z Stang Ray head and 1x12 convertible cab. Or possibly a Z-Wreck (dirtier sounding amp than the Stang) head and 1x12 convertible cab. The Stang and Wreck are both 4xEL84 amps; rated at 30 watts, but can easily hang with 50w amps if you are using an efficient speaker.

Aside fom the PT20, The Dirty Shirley Mini fits the bill. One is tighter and one is fatter.

I'd also recommend the Budda SD18 and Satellite Neutron.

I think the shipping weight on my Badger30 head is 37 or 38lbs so I don't think the few lbs difference isn't gonna be that noticeable if weight is really your issue.

Bogner Atma is you're not opposed to a multichannel amp.

I can testify that the Snider California 1x12 combo is a great clean to quite gnarly platform. Great duckung trem and ducking verb, too. Super club amp!

    Here is mine:

I also have a Snider New Jersey, but that one is a full out bucking bronco. Big fun!

Badger 30 is el34 vs. el84, btw. (in case it matters) UPDATE: ah, just noticed someone else commented the same above. Just wanted to make sure you got what you wanted vs. accidentally the wrong model.

Check out the Two-Rock Exo 15. Very light and can be quiet or loud. The trick is to dime the tone controls and use the Contour for overall treble control. (Noon is flat)

Bogner Metropolis - if you can find one used. They were discontinued or replaced by a different amp for some reason by Bogner.

The beautiful chime of a Vox and the wonderful grind of a Marshall.

The Dirty Shirley Mini is another to consider in that category. THe cleans are quite nice, but hard to dial in at gig volume due to headroom -- which will be the same issue with any 20 watter. But it does have a 3 way gain structure switch, and Friedman might even add a simple clean channel (that has only one tone control), which he does for the PT. The PT with that mod would be nice if you like a tight OD. If you like a fatter tone, then the DS mini might do the trick. Both have lots of great gain, so I'm just thinking of your cleans.

Those three amps you mention are very different IMO.
