So, I'm reading the latest Michael Connelly novel, The Drop, featuring his detective, Harry Bosch. (This is a great series by the way)- and his protagonist mentions Chet Baker, having almost no knowledge of Jazz, I had never heard of him.

So... I start doing some research and find out that in addition to being a huge musical figure, he also played the trumpet in the Elvis Costello tune, Shipbuilding. First, I know nothing of Jazz, and even less about the Trumpet. With that said, to my ear, what a killer Trumpet line in this song! Wow. Piercing... haunting. I read that Elvis envisioned Miles playing the trumpet, but, got Chet as Miles was busy.

I've since purchased some of Chet's music on Amazon -great listening. Why are so many great artists such tortured souls? Kind of makes me feel a little better about being such a hack on the guitar...

Very talented guy on both trumpet and vocals. IIRC couldn't read a note, learned and gigged by ear.

His personal life is a sad story with a bad ending

Watch Chet Baker, Live at Ronnie Scott's. Costello, Van Morrison guest sing. It was near the end of his life, and you could see it coming. Read the Baker bio. Sad,crazy story.
