My Emi Private Jack isn't cutting it in my el-34 combo. I am thinking of the Governor, Texas Heat or Wizard. Any suggestions would be welcome!

What's wrong/what are you looking for tonewise. What amp?

I'm taking a very serious look at the Scumbacks at the moment.

It is a tweed Deluxe clone I had modded for EL-34's. The PJ seemed to break up to quickly and be a little bright. I guess I am looking for more complexity and character, if that makes sense...

If you have not tried a Wizard yet, I would go with that. It is my favorite new speaker of all time!!! They are great for everything I've tried them with. Or, for complexity maybe a Red Fang for its " blue " like qualities.

The question is; what kind of EL34 amp is this, and its power rating?
The amp might be too much for a single speaker like the Private Jack.
I'm very much impressed with the Man'O'War, and everyone should try this one for sure.

It is rated at 30 watts, class A power. I asked my tech to make it "more British sounding". He changed the 2 trannies, a bunch of caps and resistors, etc...

If the Private Jack is too bright, then the Wizard maybe too. OTOH, maybe the Wizard's increased bass will even it out for you. The Governor & Texas Heat should have a slightly warmer treble, but the TH will have more bass and the Governor more mids.

The Red Fang doesn't have enough power. The Tonker and Governor look like the best choices...

I recently got a Texas Heat and think it might pair well with that amp. It's not mega-efficient, which I like. It's got a very smooth high end and likes overdrive tones. I was surprised how good it sounded with my Vox/Matchless homebrew 15 watter, really reproduced that high end chime nicely. It might pair real well with a tweed deluxe using el-34's.

    good luck

FWIW, i just put a Red Fang in a Dr Z Mazarati (30W) and it worked out fabulously...and, i took it out this past sunday evening to a loud jam and rocked the bejesus out of it with no problems....no wolf-tones, no farting and the low-end held together nicely...tone to die for....

i gotta chime in again! :D i have both, the Private Jack and the Red Fang...to me, they are quite different...the PJ is like a very good sounding 70s style Greenback which i like very much...a lot of mid presense...but, even with it's 75W rating, it will cone-cry if pushed hard...i think it would be great in a multi speaker cab...the RF is indeed close to a Celestion Blue...the same? no! but for less than half the price, it is pretty damn good! plus it is rated at 30W and i have pushed it hard with no problems in a open back 1X12

The Private Jack is about 50 watts, 38 oz. magnet.
Maybe the person wants hear more mids? bottom?
without good bottom, you can say "Thin" or "Bright"

One 12 combo or 1 12 cab. I would suggest the speaker
with more power and heavier magnet. Some amp
sound great with the Red Fang. (not clean, but creamy)
    Someone loves and someone not...

I like the Private Jack too. All great sounding speakers.
All depend on people's ear, person's amp, amp's set up.
tubes, guitar? Strat? Les Paul? All different.

I like the Red Ryder 120 watts. More punch and headroom,
if you push with amp, another great choice.
