Ever since kludge hipped my to Bobby Owsinski's blog that often shows isolated instrument/vocal tracks (here), I visit about every other day usually. I almost missed this entry b/c he posted it over the weekend but wow - definitely not something to miss:

http://music3point0.blogspot.com/2010/09/eminems-pivotal-royalty-battle.html

Last week, an appeals court ruled against UMG and ordered them to pay [Eminem] a full 50% split of all royalties, instead of the 12% that they were getting before. This ruling will be worth millions of dollars for [Eminem], but it could mean that the music industry will be on the hook for hundreds of millions, even a billion dollars depending on who you talk to, in back and future royalties.

Wow! To me, Eminem's team is dead on - it's a license...

If you thought that the music industry was really changing, you haven't seen anything yet. This may be the tidal wave that finally sweeps the music industry as we know it away for good.

Good riddance to the big companies!

He's definitely in the right and he deserves everything that's due him, but without the big companies he wouldn't have made those untold millions in the first place.

Note, I'm not sticking up for the corprations, but they're not going to disappear anytime soon, no matter how misguided they are. They are huge entertainment conglomerates and people pay billions of dollars to be entertained.

This is a very important point. Additionally, there will be an appeal, so we might not yet have the final answer to whether this circumstance is one of license or not.
