I've always liked Norum - his work with Don Dokken was good too.

Am I the only person who when hearing John Norum for the first time thought "wow, that guy must listen to a lot of Gary Moore"?

    The story of the 80's:
Great players stuck in cheesy bands playing cheesy music.

I always liked the "Final Countdown" solo.

    Sorry but they are.

Saw them live last summer, tight band. Probably the best Marshall'n Les Paul tone I've ever heard, so thick.

The Final Countdown is for Europe what More Than Words was for Extreme or To Be With You for Mr Big... a song that was massively popular and garnered the band a lot of attention and success, but not at all typical of the band's sound. Europe play loud and heavy with a lot of groove, great vocals, and killer guitar. They're a great all round hard rock band who are very under-appreciated solely because they found fame on the back of one song that happens to sound very dated.

Wow. Yep, I know what you're talking about there. There was a spectacle-arms-race when the biggest bands were playing for the biggest arenas... and there was a price to pay for that.

Norum's solo albums and his work on the Don Dokken album put most Europe to shame. Damned if Up From the Ashes isn't one of the better hard rock/light metal guitar albums I've ever heard.

    Norum's just an ass kicker.

I have a newly found respect for Joey T. I admit I always thought he was just another 80's pretty boy singer but age has done him well. Dude can sing. His voice sounds better to me now that it has a little more weight to it, more character. He still hits the notes.

Europe went from a Whitesnake-like guitar driven hard rock band to a Journey-like pop rock band and now back to Whitesnake. I'm optimistic about their new album.

Did someone say Final Cow Dow? This sounds pretty close to the original to me.

Europe is a band that I've ignored simply because I didn't like "Final Countdown." I know they are talented but I could never get past my loathing of this song.

I judge Europe by this video. Seems fair.
