Am I the only who remembers G.E. Smith being hated by the guitar community back then?

The SNL band is still great! Their guitarist is incredibly good and has killer, TGP-approved boutique gear.

That was pre TGP.. haters hadnt been invented yet.

The kids I grew up with all thought he was pretty cool cept for the fact he played with Hall and Oats. I totally dug the vintage thing, none of my friends did (so I got their old BF and SF amps at very nice prices lol)

EDIT: And booo hisss on NBC for not allowing this to be seen in Canada.

Awesome, I remember seeing that video a long time ago on YouTube when GE Smith had released his Tele - I was consuming as much of his stuff as possible.

It was obviously in much worse quality and got pulled soon after that.

Great to see it again. GE's the man. His show with Buddy Guy and the SNL band is impressive.

No. I found him irritating as well during that time. The hipster outfits, the constantly rotating menagerie of cool vintage guitars, the "look at me, I'm awesome" facial expressions. I'm sure he is a really great guy, but on SNL, he seemed to exude this attitude of superiority and smugness that I personally found annoying. But then again, I was 18-20 at the time.

Very cool. Thinking back, it's amazing what I (and some friends) went through trying to cop that tone!

Nice suit Eddie! Great video -- One of the highlights of my life was seeing an unknown kid (Eddie) unexpectedly play guitar between sets at a little bar on Ventura Blvd. in Van Nuys, in about 1974. One of those moments when everyone sitting w/ me, all musicians, collectively said WHOA!!!!

Hate to be "that" guy, but...........

Valerie was the only thing about that video that was not nerve-grating.

In fairness, was never a fan of GE, EVH, or 1987.

Much respect for EVH, though, I'll take the 1979 version. I don't need to be a fan to appreciate what he did.

GE? Haven't seen that much posture-rating since TGP milque toast-smooth jazz thread.

Too much happy coke (?) !!!

Yeah, that's it exactly. I remember an official editorial in one of the guitar magazines back then which was written just to tear into him. They brought up all the points you mentioned here, and even went so far as to say he's everything that's wrong with the modern guitarist. They basically painted him as Satan. I wish I could track down that editorial—it was hilariously strong.
