Im building a gibson explorer, and want suggestions on cool finishes. I play grunge, metal, basic hard rock. Im looking for opinions, pics, whatever ya got.

Make it outta ash so it's light and sounds killer. Then shoot it flat black with no grain filler. It will sink into the grain, and be flat black. No polishing, and very metal. Rock on!

Thanks! I've been sitting on a new disc for too long now. REALLY have to finish it. I've shifted from playing to building in the past year or so.

hey man how do you build your own? are you making it from raw wood or using semi-finish parts like warmoth?

Ash isn't exactly light weight. You're better off with alder which is also a great alternative to mahogany for metal tones.

I agree that gun metal grey is a good finish choice.

Silver with blue hot rod flames on it. Years ago on "Trucks," they had a pickup in that finish and man it looked good.

Get it in mahogany, then do black grain filler, then do a trans white on top, looks sick, kinda like the older firbirds. Or do it the reverse like Collings, white filler and trans black. totally metal!

Nobody reliable sells the explorer body and neck, so i get that from there. Then, I will buy a bigsby of tunomatic with stopo tailpiece. tuners: grover, pickups dimarzio, hardware chrome. And thanks for all the suggestions to anyone who commented. Right now im building a sherwood green tele replica, so this explorer will definitely compliment that kinda guitar.
