I just upgraded from a 2009 15" Macbook Pro to a recent model with 16 gigs RAM/256 gig flash drive, no Touch Bar. It was on sale for $500 off.

The sales person at Best Buy steered me away from the Apple USB Super Drive and suggested that I buy an LG SP80 DVD/CD drive. When I took it out of the box it turned out to be a real flimsy piece of junk.

I've been reading horrible reviews of the Apple USB Super Drive. What do you use? Can anyone recommend something?

    Thank you!

The Apple USB Super Drive is excellent. Get one (for about $100) and be happy.
As it has a hard-wired USB-A cable you might need a USB-A to USB-C adapter, not a big whoop.

I have an Asus drive I bought at Frys. It was like $30. Don't forget the USB adapter for the mac.

I use the LG. While it does seem flimsy, it does the trick for me.

Pretty much all external drives these days feel pretty flimsy, except for the Apple one, which is probably the same thing as the $30 one but in a $70 aluminum case. But unless you're using it as a coaster while you're burning discs, or plan on putting it in the bottom of a backpack with your computer on top of it, it should be fine.
