It just occurred to me that facepalms are rude. They're dismissive and condescending and don't do anything to further a discussion.

    What do you guys think?

Never use them. The posters foolishness speaks for itself without captioning.

Depends on the context. If you're going to troll, or say really idiotic stuff on the internet, you should fully expect to be facepalmed.

I don't like seeing it in the context of a reasonable discussion. If I make a thoughtful point, then you make a thoughtful but opposing point, and then I facepalm you, it shows immaturity, insecurity, and possibly un-descended testicles on my part.

Of course they're rude and dismissive. That's the whole point.

Face palms are condescending, dismissive, and very rude.

Would you really use that technique in real life conversations in a vaguely ad hominem attempt to win an argument?

Sure. The whole facepalm meme comes from a real-life action that people do when they're very frustrated with a discussion. Probably not the best way to de-escalate the conversation, but it happens IRL all the time.
