I love the guitar tone on that song. Some amazing fuzz tone! Anyone know how to cop that sound? What pedals, settings etc. do you use? Can it be replicated live?

Think one of the main things, it's done in open E
    I think
    Some may say/play open G

    Then distort from there

Blackout Effectors Mantra gets me in that ballpark, which is impressive since my rig is all wrong (ASAT Special through BFDR-type).-E

    It does.

Greer Ghetto Stomp can get you close too.
Little different sound but pretty damn close.

That tune's all about Ronnie's killer right hand IMO.

I don't think there's any fuzz used on Stay With Me. Pretty sure it's open E tuning > a small Fender cranked (I think Ron Wood used a Champ). You can see the amp in the back of the stage in this live vid. That, and like big mike said - you need to cop Ronnie's right hand dynamics and groove to really nail it.

That's a FENDER?! Well, that helps explain why the Mantra works so well. :p Why isn't there a decent DVD of all the great live Faces stuff? -E

A lot of guys were doing that re: small cranked Fender as a preamp into a bigger amp - Woody, Jeff Beck, Ace Frehley...

    Man I love that sound.

Someday i'ma build me a champ and try some of that stuff.

The ampeg's I've played if you cranked them, it was right there too.

Nice! I'm considering trading a strat for a GS12R from 66. Wonder if that would do it.

    not sure though.

Here's a great vid on how to play Stay With Me. The guy goes over his amp at the end of the vid as well. Check it out. He gets pretty darn close to Ronnie's tone with it too!

I don't have anything useful to add about the actual gear used, but I love the sound.

To my ears it's, above all, output tube distortion on a pretty low wattage amp, probably something with a fair amount of top end extension (fenderish). I've found that with the help of a decent clean boost you can usually tune the response and timbre of anything from a Champ to a Deluxe Reverb to get a really gnarly, dynamic and good sounding output tube distortion. The boost not only helps one get things happening at the right volume, but can also change the tone and dynamics in useful ways (I assume by also overdriving the amp's front end). With blackface fenders, especially with single coils, it helps if the boost pedal has a mid or "fat" switch or control.

I really love this one, and I think the sounds I get with this pedal and my vibro champ are in that Ronnie Wood territory.

I'm ashamed to say I had no idea so I just checked--apparently a Fender labeled 12ax7. Probably was in there when I got the amp about 10 years ago. Sovtek maybe?

    lol

Likely a Chinese Ruby, I think they made a lot of the Fender-branded preamp tubes in the '90s.

    Sounded great regardless.
