I was shuffling my Spotify playlist today and I got back to back: Love In Vain (Ya Yas) and All Down the Line. Love MTs slide playing. Then it got me thinking that a lot of my faves play slide (Joe Walsh, Ronnie, MT, Gibbons...). I “can” play slide, various tunings etc. but don’t play well. Love listening though. Got me thinking. What famous players in the classic rock/blues genres don’t play or rarely play slide? I know SRV didn’t play a lot, Clapton either. BB never as far as I know. Angus? Who are some others that come to mind?

That list would be a very long one.

Clapton was/is a self admitted non-slide expert. He did try though. :aok

Did Jimi have any songs with slide other than Watchtower?

edit: Waterfall(May This Be Love) had some slidey parts, not really playing melodies though.

Keef had some early stuff. I don’t think all the slide was Brian.

Isn’t Motherless Children on Clapton’s album 461 Ocean Boulevard?

Here’s a few more tunes on which EC plays slide: Give Me Strength, Sign Language, Mean Old Friso and Running On Faith.

    BB King

His whole vibrato was developed to emulate the sound of a slide....or so I’ve read/heard.

Like his choppy/staccato lead playing Keith’s slide guitar work is pretty easy to identify. It ain’t pretty, but tends to work well for the song. His slide playing on (the song) Let It Bleed is a good example imo.

Did any of the 3 Kings play slide? What about Albert Collins?

Yep... BB himself said this many times - was trying to cop the sound of his cousin, Bukka White

Clapton is a great slide player. Lots of rock players don't play slide. Trower, Nugent, Marino, etc.
