Fane Speaker Clone Recommendation

I have a Hiwatt style amp (from Phaez) and a vertical 2x12 cab (from Sourmash). I was hoping to get a Fane sounding pair of speakers to complete the package.

I've not heard any of these speakers but was looking for a little advice on a selection:

Weber Thames
Weber Axis 12
Weber FC12
Byron Amps Leeds
Byron Amps Starfinder

Cabinet is closed back with 2x 2" ports

Any recommendations or suggestions?

For real Fanes, talk with Darin at Tonic Amps. It's not like Fane is out of business. There were a number of different models starting from the mid/late 60's and moving forward. Try to narrow down the era or an artist/record.

It'd be a whole lot cooler if you did.

I have some Thames sitting here waiting for a custom 2X12 cab to be built. I'll report when I can.

I guess I don't know what I don't know.

I do know that I have Weber Celestion clones and vintage jensen clones. They're great, but I want a different sound. The Fanes are pricey, and even though I'm a brit, I'm not enthusiastic about buying UK speakers shipped to the US when there's perfectly good speaker makers here.

I've had good luck with Webers, so I'm leaning that way, the Thames maybe, but I've read posts where folks have said that the Thames sounds more like a celestion than a fane??! So I'm back to square 1.

I'm just looking for a little feedback from the few folks who've used these.

I just received my 2nd AXA12

I'm hoping to change out the Weber Blue Dog 75 for the Fane tomorrow and see how it sounds with my EVM12L

I'll be bugging your for a full report!!

Who's making your cab? If you've not decided, Sourmash in FL do a very nice job.
Yeah- I got the Thames not with the intention of seeking out a Fane clone but rather an SRO clone with some higher end focus.

Kerry Wright is building my cab-

I'll check sourmash though. Are they your homies? Got a link? I have some AXAs too. Those are killer. Darin built the cab that has those as well. I think I might open the back up on it though.

Alnicos need some air..**** maybe all speakers do.

Other than the Fane Studio 12 and the Delta Pro- I'm done with ceramic speakers. The cleans are great but I'm not down with the OD side. It's not for everyone though.

Unfortunately the HI TONES are only available with a cab. You can'y get just the speakers. They look good, mind.

When I look at all the prices for better AlNiCos
the AXA12s aren't out of line at all.

I'm trying to bring out the AC100 side of my Hot Cat 100R
a bit more, so this should be interesting.

My only problem with Fanes is wanting lots more of them.

Well I'm having to make some adjustments' cause now
the Hot Cat 100R is all Jangle Box in the clean channel.

It's too early to tell how I'm going to like the OD tones
with the EV AXA12 blend.

Before I'm done, I'm going to try the Weber Blue Dog 75 AlNiCo with the AXA12.

The Weber got that chewey compression working hard along side of the EV
where the EV and the AXA12 is like clean mids and cleaner mids with sparkle.

The EV seems to be dominating a bit, but it's kinda early to tell.

My only concern with the Weber is in how the low end holds together
along side of the Fane.

hey FFTT..love your clips of the Ampegs...throwing that out there...

I think Fane should get on the stick and get those Purple labels rolling...that said...I am very interetsed in the HiTone speakers. Those may be the best of the clones....anybody have a HiTone bottom to record?

I would love to get some HiTones and put them in my Orange bottom or an Emperor bottom...

george scholz SUGARCONES are the best for FANE style speakers -- but they are out of production and will never be made again :(

I was talking to Darin about why no cast frame Crescendos
and he told me it was about the re-tooling costs more than anything.

Even so, the Crescendos that are so desirable were more PA midrange
drivers than guitar speakers.

When you are pushing WALLS of them through several thousand watts
of PA system with all the appropriate subs and hi horns, sure the Crescendos
cut through great, but honestly they can be a bit honky on their own.

I'm finding that the AXA12 is more like a tight crisp version of my
vintage Jensen AlNiCo.

If you want a ceramic high powered Fane, I think you would be more than
happy with the Medusa 150-C Cast Frame Ceramic.

Dude Man!

I just through messing around with my AF105NT Hollow Body
and the Hot Cat.

Boy Howdy what a jangle box in the clean channel!

I was only 9:30 on the volume, nice and easy and it just sparkles
with the Fane and the EV.

Where did that come from? I've had a G12C and it's nothing like an EV or Fane (alnico or ceramic). On the other hand, the WGS Blackhawk 50 (own it...and I hear the 100) sound phenominal. Macaroni likes his BH100 better than the Fane AXA12.

I have the BH50 and can confirm it sounds every bit as good as this AXA12 clip, maybe better: http://www.watfordvalves.com/soundfactory.asp
Thw WGS site compares the Blackhawk 50 to a Celestion Gold. Are you sure it sounds Faney?
