Which one do you choose of the studio albums? and why?
They had some good ones
A lot of these in the poll had Paul Raymond who recently passed away-
he added a lot to the band, IMO.
No real duds from Phenomenon to Obsession in my opinion (and I have no experience outside of that, except for Strangers, which we all know and agree is awesome). Lights Out was my pick, but I could easily go with Phenomenon or Force It too.
The solos on Lights Out are amazing, especially on the less heavy tunes.
Strangers in the Night has the definitive versions of Lights Out and Rock Bottom for me.
But Lights Out has their cover of Alone Again Or, and the song Getting Ready, which I love, so I’ll go with that.
Obsession, due almost all to Only You Can Rock Me. That song has my favorite electric guitar solo of all time.
Special nod to Walk On Water as well.
I liked Force It.
From Phenomenon to Lights Out is like one big fat awesome riff sandwich drenched with solo laden honey / extended album to me.
So I pick that, all four .
This plus No Place to Run. So those five.
What about 2012's Seven Deadly? That is one of my favorites but picked Phenomenon. I never totally bought into UFO though. I usually listen to Strangers in the Night which has a lot of the songs I really like.
Strangers In The Night; it’s not even close.
Schenker-era studio: Obsession
Chapman-era studio: No Place To Run
Strangers In The Night
Side 3 might be the best example of a live band absolutely destroying their audience that has ever been recorded. It's like a bomb goes off when they start "Lights Out." And listen to the crowd by the end of the song. They know they've just witnessed a live band who just absolutely killed it...
No Heavy Petting.
Lots of well written high energy songs. IIRC not many bands besides punks were playing with such speed. After listening to all the remasters that came out ten years ago realized NHP was my fave.
If I had to pick one.. Obsession.
I went with Obsession because of "Only You Can Rock Me"
I wore out two or three UFO Obsession 8 track tapes, repeatedly listening to that tune.
I love Michael Schenker. Always have and always will. Instantly recognizable, even the very early stuff. Not overly technical, but the most melodic and vocal like solos of his peers. And that vibrato.......
I've been working at Hot n Ready and trying hard to not just play the right notes, but play with the feel/vibrato he has and while playing the correct notes isn't too difficult, getting the nuances to sound right, is very difficult. I've heard alot of guys say "I learning Lights Out note for note..live version" then I hear it, and it's not remotely in the same tone/phrase/feel/ even though most of the notes may be correct.
Music starts at 3:20.
Guitar solo starts at 5:20 and at 7:00.
As with Gilmour, phrasing is everything when covering Michael, Uli, etc.
(and played with too much gain/distortion)
Or no cocked wah.
Baby you can cock my wah
