I've got a Gibson Faded Flying V from @ 2005 or so, that's been through a few sets of pickups. They all sound great as this guitar has amazing sustain, but it also tends to be a little bright.

I'm looking for something with decent clarity, but a little thicker in the mids than say Seths or Classic 57's or Dimarzio 36th Anniversarys.

Classic rock, blues, alt country and occasional VH-AC/DC-level gain.

    Thoughts?

Antiquities have nice, honky midrange and good clarity they hold up well with moderately high gain

My other LP has Custom Shop Pearly Gates in it. The bridge is probably thicker overall, but it’s brighter too. For classic rock, blues and alt country, I prefer the one with the Ants. For ZZ Top, Gov’t Mule, amd the AC/DC, VH stuff, the Pearlies are better.

Either one will cover all of that though. I love both sets.

How about posting which pickups you've tried?

Those are what I've tried. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

    Thanks!

    I put a DZ Super 2 neck/Super Distortion bridge in my Silverburst V and it's a monster.
Have a set of Fralin Pure PAFs in a 98 Korean Epi Korina V and it's very versatile.

In what way does a V differ in sound from other solid bodied Gibsons?

I have a set of 36ths in an ec401v. They get honkier as they get raised closer to the strings.

Those are mahogany, so there are tons of pickups that would work.

Wolfetone Marshallheads. If that doesn't work nothing will. Check the wiring harness, too. I've seen some funny **** come out of the Gibson factory.

Arcane '58s in my Williams Korina '58 V. They do it all - clean to scream & sound clear & warm. Might be your amp though - what're you running?

I’ve always had the stock Gibson pickups in my ‘03 V and I have no complaints. This thread makes me wonder what I’ve been missing.

I had a Faded V for a while and thought it sounded fine as well.

Don’t let the corksniffers fool you; Gibson makes excellent pickups. Not speaking as a fanboy, as I enjoy guitars and pickups from a wide variety of manufacturers. I’ve never felt a strong desire to swap out a stock Gibson’s pickups.

To my ears, the V has a tone similar to an SG but with the sustain of a Les Paul. Neck pickup tone is more like a Les Paul due to the similar neck pickup placement (an SG has the neck pickup closer to the bridge).

I like original Bill Lawrence L500xl in the bridge L500r in the neck. Hard to go wrong with Super Distortions Dean Z put them in both routs.

I just took BB Pros out of mine and replaced them with Black Dogs (and a fresh wiring kit). Took it from good to “whoa”.

Just played a flying V with Duncan blackouts, and am considering trading my strat for it. Pickups were killer. Not as flat as EMGs, not as classic as the Fluence on the Satchel.
I bet the Godwood set I have on my Explorer would be even better.
