    Hey folks,

I used to have a Magnatone Varsity Deluxe which I sold for some reason I should be smacked for. That was a hip sounding little amp that would have made some very cool sounding tracks (but I wasn't recording when I owned that amp).

I'm looking for something else similar ot that. From the 50's or 60's, hopefully that needs some work so I can save money and tune it up myself.

We've heard about Supro as being a fav used on a lot of the old classic recordings (Led Zep, etc).

Which amps come to mind in this category, and hopefully that aren't already hyped and over priced! Needing some brands/models to keep an eye out for.

    Thanks in advance!

    Paul

i have an old Alamo Embassy. its a hybrid solid state pre, tube power. the tremolo is great, and with an extension speaker, the amp is very nice. I got it for 50 bucks in the local classifieds.

Anyone else care to weigh in on this?

any old tube amp can sound pretty decent with the right cab hooked up. Try to avoid amps that have out of production tubes. unless you dont mind hunting down nos tubes.

good luck, try everything. You might find a true jem!

The Silvertone amps get a lot of positive reviews and they're still cheap. I wish I still had mine but that was long ago.
