Hi you guys, I'm in a band where a female takes 30 to 40% of the lead vocals and we're finding it hard to come up with good cover song options that are reasonably rocking. Can you help? (starting in 90's moving forward)

Another idea -- male lead vocal songs a female could sing well? (i.e. Jane Says)

    Veruca Salt
    - Seether
    - Volcano Girls

    The Breeders
    - Cannonball

    The Donnas
    - Take It Off

    Hole
    -Celebrity Skin
    - Malibu
    - Violet
    - Doll Parts

    The Cranberries
    - Zombie
    - Linger

    Letters to Cleo
    - Here & Now

    ?????????????????????????????????????

We have a female singer and get alot of material from Pink. In the past we've done the following tunes: Sober, Raise Your Glass, So What, Please Don't Leave, Who Knew, Leave Me Alone, Just Like A Pill.
All have been well received, and we still regularly play them in rotation. There's some great guitar parts in her studio recordings too.

If it's gotta be '90s or newer, throw in Avril Lavigne, Paramore, Sixpence None the Richer, maybe Sheryl Crow?

You might also consider some slightly older tunes - you can always play them in a more modern style. Here are some that go over really well when we do them:

    Heart - Barracuda, Alone
    Jeff. Starship - Jane
Pat Benatar - Hit Me With Your Best Shot
Lita Ford - Kiss Me Deadly
Joan Jett - Hate Myself for Loving You, I Love Rock 'n' Roll

Check out Grace Potter & The Nocturnals.

Also we do Joan Osborne's cover of Gary Wright's "Love is Alive". Killer tune.

Every rock cover band with girl singer should do Benetar's Heartbreaker.

    Every. Single. One.

Check out Nicole Atkins. I know they aren't the most popular yet, but she's really great. The band is very original and the music is fun to play.

Her version of Dave Mason's "Only You Know and I Know" used to go over very well, too.

Some that we used to do, that went over well:

Only Happy When It Rains - Garbage
    Mercy - Duffy
Bring Me Some Water - Melissa Etheridge
    Brass In Pocket - Pretenders
    Voices Carry - 'Til Tuesday
    Call Me - Blondie
    Misery - Pink

And, shockingly, Edge of Seventeen used to absoutely kill, everywhere we played. Every girl in every venue will know every word to this song, even if they don't have any idea what it's about. <g>

Dude, how about "Rid of Me" from PJ Harvey? Or, anything from her. Rid of Me is so damn raw!

I would take the opportunity to play something from Soundgarden.
