The current version of the AVRI has been around since 1998, pickups and all.

MY '57 AVRI is from 1989, not 1998. Not sure if these are the same thing. I know the 57/62 pickups were redone somewhere between then and now.

The American Vintage 57/62 Strat pickups were changed in 1998. Fender explained at that time that it had reverse engineered a 1963 Strat pickup to make pickups that more closely resemble the vintage ones for the new American Vintage Reissue models. The redesigned 57/62s use staggered Alnico V magnets and can be distinguished from the 1981-1997 American Vintage 57/62 Reissue pickups by their beveled edges -- the older pickups do not have the beveling. And the newer pickups are good -- I have a set in my 1998 MIM 50s Classic with a .1 mfd cap (and a replacement AV trem bridge), and they sound great !
