Crazy reading through here and seeing so many guitarists not familiar with Nels. Worth checking out at the very least, and not just his work in Wilco!

So Fender could've remade Clapton's Blackie, and the other numerous strat artist guitars they've made with no payment to the artist, or even asking them? Afterall, just because they added wear to them it's "Fender's guitar - they own the design and everything about it." The artists just owned a "particular example" and that's where their "claim to anything ends." Am I understanding this correctly :huh

The question here is, can Fender Custom Shop make a distressed black strat with a maple board, or is that automatically a Clapton guitar?

You have a good point. And we're definitely amplifying this whole thing. But I do think celebrities, most of us in fact, have a pretty specific goal in mind when posting on social media. Whether it's projecting success, intelligence, broadcasting achievements, seeking empathy, sympathy, or a cry for help. Whatever it might be. From minor outrage to an observation on similarities between guitars. He must recognize that he has a constant audience of more than 26,000 followers. To me, his post reads as a straightforward attempt to shame Fender. I just don't read it as a passive observation. I'm guessing he thought this would have played the other way, but it seems most here - we, (guitar dudes, music fans) the audience - don't share his position. Anyway, I think you make some good points.

It's the only one that looks like that. We can disagree about Fender's part in this, but that's obviously a copy. As others have mentioned, this isn't the first time Fender has done this.

I think he just wanted them to know that HE knew.

Looking at the two images I don't think it's a very good attempt if they were trying to do a knockoff. The wear patterns aren't even that similar. Besides, bitchin' about a one-off when you play copies of Fender is pretty weak...

I think this shot, more than the one I found, shows just how intentional of a non-tribute tribute guitar it is.

You have no way to know that "is the only one that looks like that".

Well done, Nels Cline. You just increased your audience by this marketing gimmick of yours. (or publicity stunt)

It's a relic'd 1959/60 style black jazzmaster with tortoise pickguard. Nothing special, IMO.

We all know it's a copy. Dig up some photos if you can.

They should have gone to him, and given him a deal. This is total BS from Fender.

Anyone stop to think that maybe, just maybe, it was a special order from a customer?

Just a phone call or an email. I don't think he would be very demanding.

Do they still sound like an airplane engine live? lol. I completely missed them in 2008. Regarding Americans, I'm not sure how big MBV is, but I do know they've inspired a lot of musicians that have inspired me.

Not a very good copy looking at the side by sides if so....but you sidestepped my point...that there is no way to know that there is only one of these that looks like this out in the world.

I think it's pretty unique to Nels. Of course it's not a great copy. Fender is not known for their relicing.
