No real tone comments, but love the short scale and it plays great.

According to Sweetwater the Fender Jaguar Bass is 34" scale. Is the Squier 30"?

The Jag basses are available in long and short versions. My experience has been that the Mustang basses are the more popular short scale.

Can one completely roll off/turn off the J pickup, or will it always make some sound? I.e., if I turn the J pickup's volume all the way down, is it actually off?

On my Fender SS Jazz PJ, I can turn either pickup all the way down and no sound will come out from that pickup. I believe it's like any other volume pot - turn it all the way down and you'll get no sound...
