I'd like to buy my first ukulele. I'm attracted to the concert size.
I'd like some recommendations from uke owners/players to help me get into an instrument that is:

    A) Moderately priced (well under $500)
    B) Of reliable quality (consistent action and intonation)
    C) Uses 'approved' tone woods with a hopeful solid top
    D) Geared tuners instead of friction style

I'll admit to being overwhelmed by the wide selection od brands and models in this price niche. Any advise appreciated!

Santa brought both my son and me a Gretsch G9110. All mahogany and geared tuners -- despite the pictures on most of the store sites. $120. Really dig the sound, kind of mellow as ukes go.

Winklin, I might suggest you get in touch with Mike McQueen over at ukerepublic.com. Wading thru all the uke choices can be a daunting task. Mike is a great guy, runs a top-notch store and I couldnt recommend him highly enough! I know he would be delighted to help you and his knowledge is likely to be a little more in-depth than what you might get from this thread...

I got a concert, but now I wish I had picked a tenor size instead. Do play a few to make sure the concert's definitely what you want.
