New, you're in Epi, Agile territory. How about the Guitar Fetish Xaviere XV-500's?

Used you're in Korean Tokai, maybe Edwards. Also, lower model Greco, Burny. (MIJ Tokais are getttin' $800 and up)

Stash aside a few more dollars and look for a used Gibson Les Paul Studio. I think the current crop of Chinese Epiphones are lousy. The older Korean ones were OK for the most part. Otherwise, search Ebay for a Tokai, Edwards or Burny. They're good value guitars.

Yes...... IMHO the best sub $500.00 guitar out there. I prefer the Tremonti's as the have fretboard binding. Tradition also makes a good LP copy. I owned a Edwards and found it to sound weird. probably was the PU's.

The SE SC is a great guitar, and i will likely buy one down the road but I hesitate to even call it a "LP style guitar", sure it has humbuckers and a cut away but that is about as far as it goes. It doesn't sound or feel anything like a LP. Every other guitar maufacturer you listed makes replicas, the PRS does not really fit into this list. For the $500 it is hard to beat an Epiphone standard Les Paul, it isn't just a Les Paul style guitar, it is an actual Les Paul, despite what you may have heard from some guitar snobs.

Have a look at Reverend's Roundhouse. Truth be told, I have not played that particular model, but I have demoed a number of Reverends, and each was outstanding.

I second the Tokai Love Rock. Find a good one and they are REALLY good.

PRS SE is also very strong. Have only played one of those (it was a dual P90 model), but I was impressed with the quality. The one I demoed is at the link below. I'm confident you can get it for less than the ask. http://www.fretnfiddle.com/cgi-bin/ustorekeeper.pl

I've also read good reviews of Swing guitars, which are Korean made. GP absolutely slobbered over their LP-style axe (the Classic), which you can see here.

I've also played some Michael Kelly guitars, which I thought were very solid for the money. Here's their LP style (Patriot)

I'd recommend a used MIJ copy. Look hard and you might be able to find a deal, even though the prices have gone up some.

If you can snag a Vintage Mahogany for around $700 by all means do it. Otherwise the high end Agile's are quite the bang for the buck and you'll have money left over. the PRS SE's are great value as well. If you can keep the price down you can afford to upgrade it immediately.
