For the last year, I've been streaming music from the interwebz via a Google Chromecast Audio (optical out) into a Cambridge Audio DAC (optical in). Works and sounds great.

Then a few days ago, I removed the DAC and connected the Chromecast straight to the RCA inputs on the amp, i.e. using the Chromecast's internal DAC.

    One word: MUD!

Muffled, murky, veiled sound coming out of my Elac bookshelf speakers. The Cambridge Audio DAC (DacMagic Upscaling DAC) is more than ten years old, but still works fine. Just goes to show: crap in crap out.

A decent DAC can really take the blanket off a digital source. I have a Schitt Audio Modi 2 and it makes a difference.

I’m in the middle of a move. As a temporary set up I packed up my Benchmark HGC 2 ($2k) DAC, and use the internal DAC in my Bluesound Node 2 ($500). Completely obvious results. Still a great reminder that the DAC is everything in digital audio. Love my Benchmark (it’s God!).

Jealous. I'll suffer with my Apogee Duet. I've heard a Benchmark many times and you are right.

Any thoughts on the Benchmark DAC1?

I know they're old but they are getting to be quite affordable on the used market.

+1. I'm using an Oppo HA-1 (so sad they shut down) and it's pretty brilliant. Noticeable difference when I switched temporarily to my Studio 192 (long story). Was about 1K new.

Anyone had experience with the Jolida Dac, with two 12ax7's?

I have a Wadia 170 for an iPod classic. It is an amazing improvement to the quality of the sound.
