I grew up on Surf music and in high school was a big Zappa freak. I'm currently reading "Surf Beat" by Kent Crowley and Zappa and some former Mothers are mentioned quite often. I never knew these recordings existed, let alone that they featured Zappa on guitar (probably old news to the Zappa diehards):

Cool, I never heard any of those before, I knew he had done "Run Home, Slow" but never got to listen to any of it before. Interesting how you can hear some of his style in the guitar solo on "Grunion Run" and some of the arrangement for the movie.

    Thanks to all who posted.

I thought I had read that Frank was one of the pioneers of recording the "surf" sound when he was working in a studio way back? Don't remember the details, unfortunately, i could be mis-remembering.

My 6 year old has been fascinated with surfing lately so I picked up a surf music collection CD at flea world last week and we've been listening nonstop. Great stuff.

I finished Surf Beat a couple of months ago. A nice companion to that is John Blair's new book Southern California Surf Music 1960 to 1968. You can order it from Amazon. While Surf Beat gets into the weeds with all sorts of details, John's book is filled with captions under photos of all the cool bands, places and gear along with adds for various dances and concerts. It's a surf music museum in book form.

I really like the Run Home, Slow soundtrack. FZ was a helluva composer.

All I've heard of it was from the Lost Episodes. I probably skipped it to listen to Tiger Roach for the umpteenth time.

Yes, the Surf Beat book talks about Zappa being involved with many of the recordings--just now getting into it.
