It seems that Ford and other automakers are piping in the sounds of a big, beefy, V8 engine to cover up the quieter sound of today's more efficient engines.

OK, it's annoying to be faked out like this, but is it really any different than using an amp or pedal that sounds like the much more expensive real thing?

This also speaks to a potential business opportunity, engine sound modelers. You put this little box under your dash and your '98 Dodge Caravan will sound just like a brand new Ferrari 458 Spider!

It's the same problem every Aztek owner has: On the outside, everyone still knows what you're driving!

I remember on an episode of Pimp My Ride they installed something called a Vroom Box that did the same thing except this thing had samples of various exotics and muscle cars. I think it actually makes sense for electric cars that make no noise. Personally I'd want one that sounded like George Jetsons car or better yer Fred Flintsone's when starting from a complete stop.

Gee my Prius didn't come with any fake engine sound. I feel cheated.

This is not new. BMW, Porsche, and others do it as well.

Some do it through the car stereo (BMW), others do it by piping the acoustic sound through channels in the chassis and into the cockpit (Porsche).

At the end of the day, noise restrictions are getting tighter and tighter, and as the sound of sports cars are a huge part of the experience, they are doing what they can to make the car enjoyable for the driver.

I hated the idea too....but in the end, if it convinces and makes the driver smile, who cares how it is done, and which on looker it does not impress

If that’s true, then maybe your best course… would be to tread lightly.

I have a Fiesta ST that has a "Sound Symposer ", which is a plastic tube that is connected to the intake and pipes the sound into the car. I promptly eliminated it.

No idea why anybody would want MORE noise.

If I could have a car that doesn't even SOUND like it's on, I'd be all over that. I hate noise.

I agree but they need to make some sound for the blind so they don't get hit when walking.

I can't wait for Harley to get on board with this.
I want every dude with "life-saving" pipes to have 130dB rammed into his earphones.
