Legally free? Would be audacity. Reaper would be the best out there period and while it's a uncrippled program, they still ask for a $60 buy fee after 30 days. They work on a honor system so if a user wanted to never pay they wouldn't hound you or cripple the program. After 30 days you'll be so floored with how awesome it is you'll wanna pay anyways.

Audacity is your easiest and best bet to get your feet wet.

    This.

Reaper is NOT free, assuming you are an honorable person, but it is the best $60 you'll ever spend on recording software.

like everyone else i'll say reaper and pay the money, or audacity.

Also i used to use cool edit pro 2 way back when and i never thought it sucked, i was able to do a lot with that program, especially for the time.

Exactly. It took me about 2 days before I figured it was the best program out there! No hesitation forking over $60 to them. :dude

Audacity. Mine had some bugs....basically couldn't record after a while. (mac).
I can still open files and I do use it to edit and emply effects to the stuff I record in Amadeus Pro (cheap to buy).

I wasn't that thrilled with Audacity honestly. Good for messing with mp3s from practice sessions recorded on my H2, but was about it.

If you're slightly adventurous, take a look at this http://ubuntustudio.org. Os, application, everything all wrapped up in one... downloadable .iso image you can burn to disk, and install to dual boot alongside widows right off the CD. Or, if you're already on Linux or using a Mac, checkout http://ardour.org/

seriously, unless you really spent some time with it you may wanna give it another shot. I've been using cool edit for years and once you know what it can do and how easily you will sing a very different tune ! I have yet to find anything that my imagination can dream up that i couldn't pull off with CEP. I'm just trying to help you.....give it another shot if you have the time to learn it. It's quite easy to learn even the advanced stuff if you take the time, but like anything it does take some time. And if you only spend a few hours with it you can't possibly know how good or bad it is. If you need help with it just email or PM me and i'll help you out.
