I've got a couple of "not too shabby" sounding acoustics that are not doing anything and I was wondering if anyone has fiddled with removing the frets, filling the fret slots, and making a fretless slide acoustic? I know it may seem a bit ridiculous but, hey, I have the time and the gear and figured, "why not". Any input is welcome! Thanks!

I've done it to solid body electrics but not an acoustic. You'll have to take into account the need to lower the action once the frets are gone.

Ha, I've got a partially fretless crappy catalog acoustic that I use for slide. The neck is so terrible, I had to yank out all the frets above the neck joint!

I love that hahahaha. I've got a couple of crap acoustics and just need a couple of projects. A fretless acoustic seemed like a neat idea. Thanks!

Ha ha, I found a old Silvertone acoustic sitting outside of a Anchorage Alaska pawn shop during the winter (back in the mid-70's), with heavy gauge strings on it, so the neck was bent like a pretzel.

So, I bought it for $1 with a soft case, strung it up with mediums, lowered what some might call it's "action" (though I was able to leave the upper frets on due to the bow in the neck LOL!)

It's a cool cheap sounding slide guitar (great for acoustic delta blues).

I don't see the need to take the frets out. Slide doesn't care if the frets are there or not.

It's kind of a novelty, really, I have a couple of "marginal" acoustics and I had always wondered about it.

i did this to one of my yard-sale acoustics --- a nylon-string folk guitar --- in 1980; i used it for years, and then gave it to david sylvian after playing it on one of his albums.

Sweet. Thanks. I know it may be a bit odd, it's just something I've wanted to tinker with for a while!

Why would you need to lower the action on a slide guitar?

I took "fretless" to mean... like a fretless. If he's only going to play slide with a bottleneck or bar, that's different. I guess that would come under "taking account"!
