I told him, the Ramones are one of the most famous bands of all time.

Am I wrong? Were they not that famous?

Famous, yes... Maybe a bit too crunchy for some people.

One of the most famous bands of all time? That depends on who you ask.

I'd certainly think someone would have at least heard of them or could recognize their 2 or 3 biggest songs.

How old is your friend? If he's under 25 I wouldn't hold it against him.

    Famous? Debatable. Influential? Not debatable.

Blitzkrieg Bop has been used in quite a few advertising campaigns, video games, movie soundtracks.
See if your friend recognizes that one.

But I wouldn't go so far as to say they are one of the most famous bands of all time.

OK. Perhaps its just my age group, the over 40 something

    He is younger.

and I realize they have been out of action for awhile.

Still, this person claims to know a lot about music. I just found that to be rather odd.

    Oh well.

I'm 63, grew up on rock n roll. I was well into my 50's when I 1st heard of the Ramones and then it was only by a talk show host talking about them. I think it was Imus. Anyway, I don't consider myself a caveman, but the Ramones were not, and are not on my radar.

I'd say if you went to the mall and asked random people, 90%+ would have never heard of them.

And of the 10% that had, may 10% had actually heard a song by them.

Their first record only sold 6000 copies, when it came out. Fleetwood Mac were shipping platinum...

They are a household name as far as I know. Not as popular as van halen or the eagles. But I can't think of a person except for maybe my grandmother that hasn't heard of them. Everyone knows the name, I thought. Most people know the image and a song or two as well. If your friend claims to know a lot about music but has never heard of them, he's lying about knowing a lot about music. On top of being known, they were pretty significant, historically.

Great band, not one of the most famous of all time, but much more famous then the poster above me thinks, there music is still on radio and quite a bit of TV, so even after all this time they still have a presence.
I briefly dated a woman in the 90's that had never heard of Pink Floyd, now that is strange!

Once I was in a restaurant and my Bud had his Ramones shirt on, the hostess looked at my friends shirt and said who are the Ram 1's, we laughed very hard!

Most young listeners are not that into what came before them, Ramones have been gone for quite a while.

They hated each other so much, the story goes that they would ride in a van together for 10hrs and no one would utter a word, Fun!

I think the Banana Splits may be more famous than The Ramones.

Not really. More people bought the t-shirts than the records, and that was in the days of people actually buying records.

    Great band.
