FTR-37 owners - Problems?

Hi guys - I've been lurking for years but this is my first post...

I've had my FTR-37 for a couple of years now and have really tried to bond with it. It sounds great, but when playing in a band context it just doesn't seem to work for me,

One main problem I have is that it just seems to have way too much bass response for me which can't be dialed out. It seems to be way too overbearing - for example the bass notes of chord voicings will often dominate the rest of the chord.

Anybody else not bond with their FTR-37 or have similar problems to me?

Interesting challange. They've always sounded full and big to me...but never too much bass. Are you using humbuckers with it? I'd reach out to Fred about it as well.

i can use mine with ev or jbl's, or i have an avatar 2x12 oval back with emi gb25 & v12. so i can do real clean or add the crunch. the only time i have too much of anything is when i turn on the boost--so i don't use the boost. i use single coils or humbuckers. i run a tim with the amp--works fine with it. i use it for outdoor too--it just roars there :munch

Mostly single coils. I've been wondering if a speaker swap might help things. I'm playing pretty big stages, have tried getting it up off the ground etc but just isn't working for me. I'll be in LA next month so maybe I could work on it with Fred then...

Legitimate settings for these amps can include bass dialed down to 8-9 o'clock, i.e. setting it to say 1-2 or 3. So when you say it can't be dialed out are you saying literally that if you set the bass to 0 and bring the mid's down to say 40% it's still too bassy? For some, that's what it would take...so get comfortable with that and if necessary and see if it makes the difference.

Of course the click channel is another beast and the EQ's are not in the circuit on the click, so it's a matter of choosing the click setting that minimizes bass for you, right? I believe that's the click turned counterclockwise as much as needed., if I remember correctly.

I had this problem with a different amp, what worked for me was turning every setting down to 0 at stage volume and then I just brought them all up slowly to where I liked the sound, and then I would walk all the way around the amp to make sure I like the tone from every angle.

Like I said I was using a different amp, but you may want to give it a try.

My I could dial back the bass on the FTR I had. Just put the bass really low. If you go full counter clockwise, there is virtually not bass, so my experience is that it can definitely be dialed back. If you want it punch through the mix better, try a cab with Vintage 30s (ala Brad Whitford). I had the /13 (blue & G12H) cab, a 2x12 scumback M75 cab (which sounds great, but compresses) and my 2x12 V30 cab was the one that definitely the punchiest and cut best through the mix.

Thanks for the advice folks. I do session work and lots of different gigs. Even with the bass on 0 there's still frequencies there getting in the way of everything else. Gonna take it out on tour the next couple of weeks with my Super Reverb and A/B between the 2, and try to make it work. If it doesn't I guess it's not for me personally. I might try the greenbacks too.
