OK, for those who asked for a Gain Stage Black clip with high gain - here you go - quick & dirty. Kind of a 'Jimi' track, with a bit of chording too... http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=187271&songID=6156257 Let me know what you think. Thanks!
Clip sounds good. Hey Ron, which Kingsley do you have? Do have 6l6 in there? I just got one with el34 and it sounds way more voxy than that... Dennis
The Blue is like a Marshall with a fuzz in front, and it can do other tones as well, whereas the Black is like a JTM45 or JCM800 cranked for power amp OD type tones. The Black feels thicker and fatter than the Blue to me. I have a Kingsley D32C - the third one made, with some custom features like Power Scaling. I can swap power tubes in it, and for this clip I was using 2 x Mullard EL84s + 2 x RCA 6L6GCs. It sounds fantastic with EL34s too, and 5881s and 6V6s. I'm dying to try some GEC KT66s or KT77s.
Red = Dumble, Black = Marshalls & clean boost. Go to JetterGear.com and listen to the clips of both, and it should become clear.
Sounds great Ron. Doesn't have that overly-compressed, saggy sound of a Jtm45 fully cranked at all though. I don't know exactly which model Marshall it does sound like - maybe none of them . Certainly not like a cranked Jtm45, as I said above. Also doesn't have the brightness and cut of a cranked superlead . Much fatter than a Jcm800. I'm certainly no expert on all these Marshalls, but it seems like the GS Black has it's own thing going on. Maybe it emulates something which in our minds we thing of as "Marshall", but in fact Marshall never made. Personally, I like the clips of the black a lot. It has a surprising amount of gain and sustain. Great pedal
Thanks! I'm not a Marshall expert - actually, I haven't even played one. So I didn't try to dial in a 'Marshall' sound per se. I was just demoing a high gain setting with my particular setup. Someone with more direct Marshall experience could probably dial it in better/closer. Brad has a JTM45 & JCM800 to directly compare it to.
does it really matter if or which Marshall? based on those clips I think it sounds great and certainly my fave of the bunch...nice! Chow, Seegs
