I assume something like this would be a custom build, these days?

I'm guessing something like a Charvel San Dimas with a single HB pickguard? Unless there's someone out there who makes one like this?

It's the wiring that would worry me about that: I have no experience of wiring guitars and in this case I'd have to remove the pup selector and change the control knob wiring.

Of course, similar adjustments would need to be made with a Charvel as well.

Yeah, they're a little too "obvious", if you get my meaning.

I believe GM's red Charvel was a Custom Shop.

I made a parts build inspired by his one pickup Charvels. Basically just a Strat style with a Floyd and single EMG. I believe he had the red one and also a white one.

Just by looking at Gary’s face I would never guess he was playing a sterile sounding EMG

Imagine if EMGs looked like other pickups—people would have such a hard time knowing if they sounded sterile or not.

The modern Charvel So-Cals have the pickguards and side mounted jack. Pretty easy to convert to a single HB single volume. Biggest difference would be the FR route. Gary's is top-mounted and the newer Charvel's are all recessed.

I assume the HS one was a parts guitar as well?

    Charvel basics:
    SoCal’s have pick guards.
    San Dimas don’t.
