gas?

    why do Americans call petrol gas?

    think I might start using this term as it has 1 less syllable

    We call gasoline gas and diesel fuel diesel. aren't the vast majority of vehicles in the UK diesel? also do you call both diesel and gasoline petrol?

    It's short for gasoline.

    But around here it's spelled GAS.

    Gasoline, therefore gas, is more accurate. Petrol would be short for petroleum, right? Petroleum is refined into products: heating oil, diesel, and gasoline (gas) among other things.
