I'm currently looking to add a nice plexi sound to my arsenal. I'm really into the cleaner side of a plexi from Jimi to Angus not Eddie. I recently played my Uncles Voodoo V-plex. It rocked. Beautiful cleans and nice crunch. The Club 40 clips on Germinos sight sound awesome as well. Any body had experience with both of these? Or maybe a Lead 55.
    Thanks

to be quite honest, germino might just be the best marshall type head on the planet today.

+1. Can't really say about the Voodoo, but can't imagine there's a better Marshall type amp out there today than a Germino. My Classic 45 rules.

Greg G. builds some very fine amps, highly recommended.

You will get a strong concensus on Germino's. They can't be beat.
I had a LV 55 that I sold to get the Club 40. The LV55 had more gain. If I could have kept them both I would have. The Club 40 sounds remarkably similar to the 1967 Marshall JTM 50 watt that I have. I mean really close.

From the ones I have heard, the Germinos sound like very refined Plexi to JCM 800s and the Voodoos have been like JCM 800 through very hotrodded JCM 800s. I have heard just a very small sample though and could be all wrong.

Thanks guys. For those that have played the Club 40 and Lead 55 What are the differences?

I have the Club 40 and it is awesome. It's very close to a JTM 50. The Hendrix clean tones are amazing and its touch sensitive too.

And if you want your Club 40 to sound like a JCM 800 sometimes, just stick a Crunch Box in front of it. :)

I believe the V-Plex is a copy of a Plexi.

+1 on germino amps! my only regret is that I got the club 40 instead of the classic 45, now that I'm itching for plexi tones.

They both have real cool names, but just in originality the Germino hands down.

I would also look at Metropolis Amplification.

I'm a Blankenship Variplex owner and don't ever/haven't ever used it to get the Van Halen tones. I think when it first came out people were talking about how great it could do that sound and it's non-VH qualities were overlooked. I run it at about 6 and rarely touch it for any tone in my head. Clean? Pick it light. Crunchy? Pick it hard. If I needed super high gain, which I don't and it doesn't sound like you do either, you can either crank it up more or add a pedal.

    Love this amp.

It gets to a certain point of great sound though that I'm sure the Germino/Blankenship/Metro/Voodoo debate is pointless. A plexi is a great amp and all of them are plexi's so..I guess it comes down to customer service and price. I think Roy's prices are fair and I can vouch for great customer service from him. I have no experience with the other builders.

Good luck and I'm sure you'll be happy with any of them!

I forgot to mention the added bonus of having the variac. Allows for a significant amount of attenuation and some tone shaping if wanted!

I wonder how many of the Germino votes on this thread have even played a V-Plex? This isn't a poll, the poster is asking for a comparison from people who have played both.

There are more Germino owners than V-Plex owners so I guess Germino wins.

I haven't played either amp but I really doubt that you could go wrong either way. Personally I would buy a second-hand Germino and then A/B it with your uncle's V-Plex.
