I need to approximate the sound of a sitar for ONE SONG, it's a melody hook line in the song and I'd like to devise a way to get a, hopefully with effects to accomplish it. Any suggestions? I have a Magic Stomp and thought maybe there's a patch or effects in it I could combine to get something that brings a sitar to mind.

Possibly an auto wah, with some nasally drive, a filter and a harmonizer?

OOH! 2 sitar threads in one day!!!!!

Go to my magicstomppro yahoo group (in sig) and download more than you could ever dream of!!!!! I work with them intensively and a lot of folks here have picked them up recently.

Here's a link to a sitar sound demo with a patch I painstakingly edited for about a month:

All sounds on all 10 youtube demos are in the files section and are free.

    enjoy!

That sitar swami above is one of the worst effects known to man......

I had the misfortune of buying one full price a few years ago from an online dealer......

It sounds like the worst flanger you could imagine with a putrid, bad tracking octavia sound mixed in.....it's vile.....disturbing even. It's plain wrong.

It really is so bad and irritating you'll want to immediatley grab your hammer and smash it to pieces and curse the idiot who invented it and the moron who had the audacity to actually release it to the public...

    IT"S THAT BAD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And, it sounds nothing, I mean NOTHING, like a sitar........

I've found EXCELLENT sitar sounds in the Electro Harmonix Polychorus. It was most unexpected, but Filter Matrix (which I'm assuming is some sort of ring mod) has some quite useful sounds.

I used to use a flanger with the sweep off (basically a comb filter) and a pitch transposer to achieve a sitar effect.

EDIT: It was an original Electric Mistress (or Poly Flange, I forget now) in combination with an MXR blue face rack unit.

Now I once had a guitar whose bridge got messed up (i didn't do it) and it sounded like a sitar on a couple strings. It could be a real cool effect if I didn't have to mess up the bridge.

Too bad about the Sitar Swami....

Me too - anyone got a clip? I can't imagine how it could do it. harry Manx of course has the funkiest sitar-guitar thing (one of Vishwa Mohan Bhatt's) which sounds great but would obviously be overkill for one bit played 4 times in one song. Mind you, with hat argument, I think I'd try an octavain type thing with a flanger and to hell with whether it actually sounded like a sitar...

    There's also this:

    Ouch. Clueless marketing 101...

Try threading different things through the strings down by the bridge and see if you can approximate the sound physically...

Cool idea but I need it ONLY for a few sections in the song, other times it needs to be normal sounding guitar.
