Coming after a (cough) much-discussed video warning other guitar builders of legal action in cases of copyright infringement and launching a law suit against Dean Guitars for copying its designs, Gibson has taken another step: The US maker has introduced a form on its website where people are encouraged to report instruments that may infringe on its copyrights.

    The web page states:

This submission form is intended only for the reporting of suspected counterfeit items that may possibly infringe on Gibson’s registered trademarks …

Gibson advises all consumers to purchase new Gibson instruments, or any new instrument from Gibson’s family of brands, only from our network of authorized dealers.

We don’t know a whole lot yet about the new page yet. But it seems clear that Gibson is taking its efforts to suppress what it sees as counterfeiting of its designs to the next level. This is the first time we’ve heard of a manufacturer encouraging the public to report copyright infringement in this way, at least in the music instruments industry.

One thing seems unclear: Are people being encouraged to tell Gibson if they see counterfeitguitars bearing the Gibson moniker but manufactured elsewhere? Or are any designs reminiscent of classic Gibson guitars like the Les Paul, SG or ES-335 being targeted, too? The recent law suit against Dean Guitars for copyright infringement would strongly suggest that Gibson is on the warpath against anyone copying its designs in any way. Could this be a major shake-up in the guitar industry? What do you make of Gibson’s copyrights offensive? Let us know in the comments section below.

Well, these forums are full of "is this counterfeit?" threads posted by normal human guitarists who want to ensure that what they buy is genuine, so it's not exactly a crazy notion.

Going after the genuine counterfeit stuff - ie with their brandname on the headstock - is good for the brand, good for consumers.

For a start, it's easy to make an argument as to why other manufacturers should be able to use shapes similar to Gibson's classic designs, but using the brand name is indefensible.

But on top of whether it's fair to steal their name and to steal their business, even if you hate Gibson and think they deserve everything they get, the forgeries are a menace to anyone that ever buys second hand. Even if the Aliexpress sellers aren't intending to pass their guitars off as the real thing, once they're over here the third party sellers quickly get stuck in looking for marks on Craigslist. People are buying this stuff all the time thinking they're getting the real thing, and you can say they should be better informed or less eager to jump on too-good-to-be-true deals, but it's still not right.

The more Gibson can do to crack down on it the better.

It's good, if they are wanting to shut down the Chibson operations.

If they are just wanting to patent troll their competitors instead of trying to win by making better guitars than their competitors, forget it.

    .

All you gotta do is look for the Authentic Broken Headstock and you know you have the real deal Gibson.
All the fakers know how to make scarf joints and protect against that problem.

Rock 'n Roll music and it's Instruments have always been about non-conforming, 'sticking it to the man', and rebellious individualism. This corporate lawyer tirade will end poorly for them.

This is great. I just advised Gibson to some douche company that made a copy of a Les Paul that turned out to be a copy. Hope they get to the bottom of this and destroy the people that..........oh, hang on a minute.

They're never going to get the Chibson guys in China, anyway, looks like they are just going after everybody. Considering all the Strat copies they've tried to sell, it's absurd.
